Naftolijs Gutmans works with printmaking, mainly etching, sometimes in combination with restrained use of a colour, by tonally enriching image with the use of aquatint. He makes intimate, emotionally saturated landscapes in a little romantic mood. In his still lifes artist emphasizes the beauty and harmony of simple objects. He works also in the portrait genre. Artist’s self-portrait series with poetic and a little ironic features, takes an important place in his creative work.
Naftolijs Gutmans has graduated the Department of Graphic Art at Latvian SSR State Academy of Art (1963) with a diploma work – etching series “Portraits of Young Builders” (led by Arturs Apinis). He participates in exhibitions since 1963 and is a member of the Artists’ Union of Latvia since 1968.
