(1916 - 1970)
One of the most famous masters of the Latvian scenography. Has created nearby 100 scenographies for various performances – “Times of land surveyors” by brothers Kaudzisi, "Green lend” by A.Upitis, “The Cherry Garden” by A.Chehov, etc. Worked in oil and in water color techniques, painted landscapes, still-lifes and portraits. Was the master of a psychological portrait, portrayed mainly actors. Manner of painting - expressive, colorful, cheerful, he used wide, juicy brushwork.
Laimdonis Grasmanis was born on May 12, 1916 in Russia.
He studied on the Decorative Painting Department at the Liepaja Secondary School of Applied Arts (1932-1937) and in the Masterclass of Figural Painting at the Latvian Academy of Arts (1937-1942).
He worked as the main set dresser in the Academic Theatre of Drama, now the Latvian National Theatre (1944-1955), designed sets for the Operetta Theatre (1954-1957). He was a set designer in Riga Film Studio (1957-1970). His creative partnership has helped to create several significant films – “The Son of the Fisherman”, “Clock of captain Enriko”, “At Rich Madam”, “The Servants of devils”, etc.
Laimdonis Grasmanis was a member of the Artists’ Union of Latvian SSR since 1945, a member of the Union of Cinematographers since 1962.
In exhibitions participated since 1937. Personal exhibitions are organized in Riga (1943, 1966, 1970, 1978). Memorable exhibition are organized in Riga (1996, 2006), Liepaja (1997). He participated at many group exhibitions of Latvian artists.
Laimdonis Grasmanis died on November 2, 1970 in Riga.
